Makeup: Five Shades of Red

Hi Everyone,

Hope you've all had a good week and ready to party/sleep off the weekend...

My inspiration for this post was the current craze for the 50 shades books trilogy. Everywhere I look, someone is doing something creative inspired by the books in someway. So I thought, why not do a five shades lipstick series. This will be a three part series over the next three fridays. I will be doing a review of five different lipsticks shades of the same colour.

Today I will be shedding the spotlight on the classic red lipstick which is a colour very dear to my heart. You wouldn't catch me wearing red lipstick in the day time though, except it's to a wedding but I love a red lip for night time glam. For me, red lips say sophisticated, bold and sexy!
If you're interested in reading about my lipstick application technique, HERE is an article I wrote for Bella Naija (Nigeria's largest entertainment website).

L'Oreal 297 Red Passion, Mac Russian Red, Mac Ruby Woo, Mac Red, Rimmel Kate 01

This what they look like swatched on my arm and taken in natural light:

Mac Ruby Woo

This is one of MAC's best selling lipsticks. Women the world over have fallen in love with Ruby Woo and it has it's own cult following. I think that before Ruby Woo, many women were apprehensive about wearing red lipsticks, but dear Ruby came and changed the game! It is a shade that complements almost all skin tones. Ruby Woo is a matte lipstick with blue undertones that has the staying power of a horse! Seriously, I get about 6hours wear with this lipstick and only usually need to top it up once, within that period. It is extremely drying though and quite unforgiving of cracks and ridges on the lips. I usually exfoliate then use a bit of Carmex before for easier application. If you are into matte lipsticks then this is the one for you.

Mac Russian Red

Russian Red might be next in line in the Mac red lipsticks popularity polls. It is quite similar to Ruby Woo but not as drying hence easier to apply. It's a little brighter than Ruby Woo, so I wear it when I'm going for more oomph with my makeup. I bought it from Konga, an amazing website that has a wide range of makeup and beauty products. I was excited to find that I can get my Mac lipsticks in Nigeria when I discovered them. Some other brands they stock are Maybelline, L'Oreal, Urban Decay, Revlon and Avon so you should definitely check them out as they have new stock often. I was also pleased with their customer service and their prices.

Rimmel Kate 01

This lipstick is one of the shades from the collaboration between Kate Moss and Rimmel. It is a deep red lipstick which I think will suit darker skin tones. It is quite moisturising with a sheen to it which is good but can also be bad in terms of control. It tends to bleed and move around a lot. It doesn't last a very long time though,  I get about 2hrs wear before it needs a touch up. If you are looking for a pretty, shiny red lipstick that won't break the bank, this one is for you. You can get it in the UK at the Rimmel Stand in Boots for £5.49. Fantastic when compared to Mac ones that retail for £14.50. Unfortunately, I haven't seen them yet in any beauty stores in Nigeria.

L'Oreal Color Riche 297 Red Passion

This lipstick is from another collaboration, this time between Cheryl Cole and L'Oreal for charity. Apparently it's Cheryl's personal favourite. It's a nice bright red with a slightly glittery finish. The glitter breaks the deal for me though, makes it my least favourite red lipstick. I also wasn't impressed with it's staying power. It is however a nice creamy, moisturising formula and still cheaper than Mac at £8 in the UK.

Mac Red

This shade is one of Mac's unsung heroes, least popular of all the red shades the brand has. It's a rich, medium-dark red with blue undertones. I refer to it as my Hollywood red shade, think Marilyn Monroe. It is a satin finish; moisturising with a subtle shine yet stays on for quite sometime. Definitely one of my favourites of the bunch as you can tell from how battered it is in the picture :). It's one I think will look gorgeous on most skin tones.

If I was to recommend one out of the five shades to you, I would most likely say Russian Red because it is all I look for in a lipstick: highly pigmented, moisturising, versatile and great staying power.
There are two other red shades by Mac I've had my eye on for a while now, Lady Danger and Brave Red. Have you guys tried either of them? Which red lipsticks are your favourite?

Peace and Love,

Y.

P.S: Please look out for part 2, Five Shades of Pink next Friday :-)

Nail Polish Review: Orly Glided Coral

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a good weekend and are pumped for the new week!

This is just a quick post to show you what nail polish I'm wearing this week. I was having a mosey around the shops this Saturday as is my usual fashion and I fell in love with this nail polish. I had to have it. It's my first time ever trying any of the Orly polishes after reading so many great reviews. Glided Coral is a shade is from their Spring 2011 Precious Collection

Here's what it looks like:

I quite like the packaging and the rubber grip makes applying the polish much easier. The brush is also a nice size for even application. The formula of the polish is ok, it did get a little bit streaky on the first coat but it evened out when I put on a second coat.

I don't know why it's called Glided Coral because it doesn't have any coral hints to me. It's a rose gold colour which is light pink with gold shimmer in it. Depending on where the light hits, it can give off purplish hints.  I particularly like it because the gold shimmer in it is not over the top like most polishes with gold hues tend to be. It is quite a subtle colour and I think it will complement most skintones.

I bought it in the Adeniran Ogunsanya shopping mall from a store called DFT cosmetics on the first floor for N1500 which is a major bargain for a full sized bottle. In England the mini Orly polishes retail for about £5.

Overall, I am very pleased with this polish and will recommend it if you are looking to try out something new. I will certainly be picking up some more shades. Do you guys have any recommendations from the Orly range I should try out?

Peace and Love,

Y.

Photos: TacticsIQ Soccer Fiesta 4

Hi Everyone,

Today I went for the 4th edition of the TacticsIQ Soccer Fiesta at Campos Mini Stadium in Lagos Island. The Soccer Fiesta is an event where 12 football teams compete for prizes and the ultimate trophy. For me and many people that were there, it was just an afternoon of fun in the sun. Hanging with friends, eating, drinking and general merriment, Lagos style!

Since it was a sporting event, I went really casual. Here's what I wore:

Top: Primark, Cropped Pants: Ralph Lauren, Shoes: Christian Dior, Bag: H&M, Sunglasses: Ray Bans

I must warn you that this post is quite picture heavy :-)

I did manage to take some pictures of the main reason why we were there, lol
