NOTD: Orly Synchro (Review)

Hi Guys,

I hope you are all doing well. Before I start with today's post, I just feel the need to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone of you that reads my blog. You have no idea how much joy I derive when I've put a post together and you guys read and comment. It's so encouraging, thank you!

Now on to the business for the day, I recently added a nail polish to my collection(like I need anymore, right?). It's one from Orly called Synchro and was released with their Electronica Autumn 2012 collection. It's the second nail polish from Orly that I have, I reviewed my first one, Glided Coral here.

It is a duo-chrome colour which if i'm being honest it is quite hard to describe. It appears rusty red/dark pink/purple with blue shimmer running through it. It reminds me a lot of Sleek's Amethyst lipstick which might be why I was attracted to it in the first place. It looked really gorgeous in the bottle but when I put it on my nails, I wasn't so sure. It kind of paled out in comparison to what I expected.

In terms of application, it applied very well without any streaks. I also like the famous rubber grip that makes Orly polishes so popular, it lets you grip the brush properly for easy application. It was opaque enough with two coats but I added a thin third coat, just because.

Overall, I just don't know with this one. I was a bit disappointed but it is growing on me, it is looking better with time. One thing I like about it though is that it is very unlike anything I have, I do tend to buy similar shades of nail polish for reasons best known to me o_O.

So what do you guys think of this colour? Yay or Nay?

Peace and Love,

Y.

FOTD ft MAC Morange (Review)

Hi Peeps,

TGIT!! The weekend starts today in sunny Lagos as there is a bank holiday today and tomorrow.  There will be lots of wild partying and binge drinking out in the streets tonight. If you don't live here, don't be jel, your weekend is only a day away :-)

I recently purchased the infamous Morange lipstick by MAC and I love it. My first foray into the world of orange lips was MAC's Vegas Volt which I quite like but there was just something missing. I was looking for an orange lipstick that packs a punch and then I found Morange. If you don't like to be the centre of attention, then I advice you stay away from this bad boy.

Morange is a bright, in-your-face orange lipstick that's not for the faint hearted. When I first got it, i'll be honest, I hated it. It seemed loud and garish. However, I gave it another go, making sure to really blend it into my lips and hey presto, new favourite lipstick.

It is an amplified finish  so it is creamy and very easy to apply. It is also very opaque unlike Vegas Volt, so two swipes will have your lips popping. In terms of staying power, it behaves like a matte lipstick as this remained vibrant for a good six hours.

Though it is really bright, I can say to you on good authority that it will complement all skin tones. Warm, neutral or cool toned, this lipstick will suit you as I have seen on a variety of ladies. Like I mentioned earlier, the only stumbling block would be if bright lips are not really your thing. If you are going to take the plunge though, Morange is a good place to start.

Swatches and FOTD

Since it is such a bright lipstick, I paired it with muted eyes so as not to scare the general public off, haha.

MAC Rice Paper on Lid and browbone, MAC Romp in Crease and Outer Corner, L'Oreal Superliner Carbon Gloss for winged liner

Maybelline The Falsies mascara

To end this post, here's a photo from my Instagram (Yewizzy) showing my full outfit of the day

Blouse: New Look, Jeggings: Select, Skinny belt: Dorothy Perkins, Shoes: Tory Burch

So what do you guys think? Will you be getting Morange if you haven't already?

DIY: Leopard Print Nails

Hi Guys,

I hope you are all well and your week started out well.

I don't know how I've been doing nail art all these months and not done a leopard print manicure. It's literally the easiest thing to do, so I decided to show you guys how this week. I used a tutorial by GemFatale, who is an amazing blogger that I follow.

What you need:

  • Base Coat and Top Coat (I used Model's Own 3 in 1)
  • A Base Colour (I used Essie's Mint Candy Apple)
  • A contrasting colour for the spots (I used Essie's Chinchilly)
  • A Nail Art Pen or Liquid eyeliner for the detailing (I used Collection 2000 Extreme 24hr)

Steps:
  • Apply your base coat
  • Apply two coats of your base colour and let it dry completely

  • With your second nail polish colour, make imperfect circle shapes on your nails

  • Outline your shapes with the black eyeliner, creating a small semi circle on the top and the bottom OR on the left and the right

  • Allow to dry completely, clean up your edges and finish off with your top coat to protect the design

I've seen this kind of manicure in dozens of colours so you can definitely play around with that till you find a suitable combination. As always, you can also choose to have the leopard print design on only your ring fingers whilst keeping the other fingers one colour if you are not a wild one like me :-). Will you guys be trying it out?

Peace and Love,

Y.

Beauty Battles #2: The Eyeshadow Primer

Hi People,

It's the weekend again! Will you be doing any fun stuff? I've got two weddings to attend tomorrow but I'm feeling slightly under the weather so I do hope I can make it.

This edition of Beauty Battles will be featuring two eyeshadow primers. I will be comparing and reviewing Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion Original and W7's Prime Magic Eye Primer. I always use an eye primer before I apply my eyeshadow to make the colour more vibrant and last longer.

P.S I have included and credited a few photos I found online because I was having camera and lighting issues.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion (Original)

This primer has been lauded and applauded by the beauty industry world wide. It has a massive following, making it onto many a makeup head's Holy Grail list, me inclusive. It has a nude/beige colour to it but it is easily blended into the eye, becoming almost colourless.
The packaging recently got a makeover from a doe-foot applicator to a squeezy bottle with a needle tip, pretty fancy. Although it's better access to the product as you can squeeze all of it out, I prefer doe foot applicators, I don't know why, I just do.

It is creamy in consistency and a little really goes a long way with it. It does what it says on the tin; makes eyeshadow more vibrant and it really does prevent creasing. In doing this review, I wore my eyeshadow for 12 hours and it didn't move an inch, it is that amazing.
It retails for £14.50/$20 which I must say is pretty pricey although you now get more product in the new tubes. Their official stockists in the UK are Debenhams and House of Fraser.

W7 Prime Magic Eye Primer*

W7 is a relatively unknown UK makeup brand but I have seen a few of their products popping up now and again in recent times. I was a bit apprehensive before I tried this product just because I hadn't seen any reviews on it, good or bad.
It's packaging is pretty basic, no frills and it has my beloved doe foot applicator which makes it easy to apply without using your fingers.

The product itself is a nude pink shade but again when blended, it takes on your natural eye colour. It's formula is slightly more runny when compared to UDPP so it can be hard to work with. When I first applied it, I used quite a bit so I found that it was slipping and sliding on my eyelid and was quite messy. On take two, I applied literally a dot on both eyes and it created a perfect base when blended in.
In a like manner, I wore it under my eyeshadow over a 12 hour period and my eyeshadow was as good as new at the end of the day with zero creasing.
I believe this product can only be purchased in discount beauty stores such as Body Care in the UK (I can swear that I have seen W7 products in there) and not Boots or Superdrug. In Lagos, you can buy it from Konga.com for N550 here, and it's available on Amazon for £2.50/$3.12.

So in spite of my fear of being lynched and cast out of the beauty blogosphere, haha, I declare W7 Prime Magic Eye Primer today's winner! As much as I love my UDPP, the price is a stumbling block in our relationship. If I can find a primer just as good for less than one-tenth of the price, best believe that I will be buying it!

Do you girls use any other eyeshadow primers that are cheap but work a treat? I'd love to discover some more :-)

DIY: Aztec Print Nails

Hi Everyone,

Something horrible happened to me, my long beautiful nails broke! I was actually really sad because I thought, whatever would I be able to do with the stubby "nailettes" I now have. I remembered that I get many people saying to me "I love your nail art but my nails are too short", so I took this as a challenge and threw caution to the wind.
An Aztec/Tribal print design came to mind because my lovely friend Ronke bought me a nail art pen and I was excited to try it out. I'm also wild about prints and Aztec is one of my favourites.

Here's what you need to create this nail design:

  • Base Coat and Topcoat (I used Model's Own 3-in-1)
  • White Nail Polish (I used one from Dierli)
  • Any two/three bright coloured nail polishes (I used Sally Hansen Insta Dri in Brisk Blue, Sally Hansen Diamond Strength in Diamonds and Rubies and Model's Own Sun Kissed)
  • A nail art pen (Alternatively you can use a toothpick dipped in black nail polish)
  • Qtips to clean around your edges

  • Apply a base coat
  • Apply two coats of the white nail polish and let it dry completely
  • Apply one stripe of the blue nail polish across the nail horizontally, a little way up from the cuticle
  • Outline the blue stripe with the black nail art pen
  • Apply a diagonal stripe of the yellow polish on the tip of the nail and outline it with the nail art pen
  • Make upside down v-shapes within the blue stripe
  • Using a bobby pin dipped into black polish, create polka dots in any empty spaces on the nail
  • Finish off with a top coat
  • Clean up around your edges with a gtip dipped in nail polish remover as this manicure can get really messy
I followed these steps for my thumb nail but for the other nails I played around a little with the colours and the designs. Just have fun with it, it does not have to be perfect.

So who says you can't get nail art done on really short nails? I say you can! What do you guys think?

Beauty Battles #1: The Nude Lip

Hi Everyone,

Felicitations des weekends! I know that makes no sense in any known language but it kind of expresses how I feel this Friday, Happy!

I really enjoyed doing the lipstick series on here and many people seemed to enjoy it too. So I’ve been trying to think up another fun series for you guys and then came up with the Beauty Battles. Over the next couple of weeks (I’m not sure how long to be honest), I will be pitting two similar beauty products against each other. One will be high-end/more expensive and the other will be drugstore/less expensive. I will review both products and at the end of the post grade them against some factors. Based on this, the winner of the edition will be chosen.

For round 1, two nude lipsticks will be battling it out to gain supremacy over the other.

MAC Velvet Teddy

When it comes to nude lipsticks, I tend to fearfully stay away from them for fear of looking like a dead fish. More recently I have started to branch out from my bright coloured lipsticks and my first trial was Mac's Velvet Teddy. It is a light brown nude shade with pink undertones which make it much easier to wear. It's formulation is matte but not the kind that drags on the lips when you apply it (Ruby Woo I'm looking at you!).

It is very pigmented like most of MAC's matte lipsticks are and it stays on around 5 hours before it starts to fade out. It has become one of my top five favourite lipsticks. It retails for £14.00.

Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish Lipstick 03

This is another of the Rimmel/Kate Moss collaboration lipsticks that I picked up in my quest for a nude lipstick that complements my skintone. It is a nude lipstick that leans a lot towards pink. A good place to start if you are just staring to test the waters with nude lipsticks. It does however have cool undertones so if you are warm toned you might want to wear a lipgloss over it to tone it down.
I love the sleek packaging with Kate's signature in red on the cap. It looks more expensive than it actually is.
It's formular is creamy without being sheeny, if you know what I mean. It takes about three swipes to get full opacity with this one.

If fragranced lipsticks are your thing then you will like this one as it has a nice bubble gum scent. It does last about 4 hours without smudging even after eating and drinking which is impressive. It retails for £5.49 in Boots.

Perfume Review: Coco et Premiere

Hi Guys,

A few weeks ago, I asked on Twitter if people could recommend some nice perfumes as I was looking to buy a new one. Quite a number of people indulged me and made some recommendations and there were one or two recurring that I had set my mind on to give a try. However luck smiled on me when I recently received two new perfumes as gifts. I've decided to review these two scents on here, a short break from the usual makeup and skincare chatter you know :-)

Chanel Coco Noir
I literally screamed and did a little dance when I received this perfume. My one and only experience with Chanel perfume before this one was with Chance which is oh-so-divine. I had had my beady eyes on Coco Noir when it was released last month for Fall. Although it's a HOT summer all year long where I live, my makeup, nail polish and perfumes sometimes move with the fashion season.

The packaging of this perfume is just gorgeous! It looks dark, sturdy, powerful and sexy; it was love at first sight. The gold detailing on the bottle contrasts really well with the jet black bottle making it the perfect accessory for my vanity table.

Chanel describes the scent as: "Magnetic and uncompromising, COCO NOIR reveals a black that is intimate, seductive and intensely brilliant. Striking top notes of Grapefruit and Bergamot accentuate the floral accord, with Rose and Jasmine, while Indonesian Patchouli and Sandalwood notes add warmth."

When I first took a whiff, it hit me really strong (in true Chanel style). I wasn't sure about it but after it had dried down for a few minutes, the gorgeous fruity but dark and rich scent came to the fore front. I think it's a perfect balance between fruity and musky, just how I would like it.  However I must point out that it's staying power is not that great, after about three hours, it faded out into a flat scent which I wasn't pleased with. I would have expected more from Chanel in this regard.

It currently retails for £75/$98 for the 50ml bottle which is a tad pricey but well worth it in my opinion for an iconic fragrance.

Gucci Premiere

Have you ever fallen in love with a perfume just by watching the commercial? This was the case with Gucci premiere. After I saw Blake Lively looking like the sun in human form, I knew that I had to have this one. The ad is breathtaking, watch it here. It is also Gucci's most recent release for Fall 2012.

Starting with the packaging again, it's the classic all gold bottle reminiscent of many previous Gucci releases. Nothing really special except it does come with two gold charms round the neck and a signature on the top, making the bottle appear dressier.

The fragrance is described as "a powerfully sophisticated aroma, with vigorous notes of wood and musk. Just as a leading lady graces the red carpet with her couture Gucci gown, so every woman deserves her Gucci Première moment.

I loved it from the moment I sprayed it on. I think Gucci really gets me when it comes to perfumes and I have never tried one I didn't like. However, if you are not a fan of floral/fruity scents you might want to give this a miss. Though they describe it as woody and musky, I failed to notice this at first. It's a really sweet, floral smell and reminds me very much of Gucci Flora. However, when it dries down, it then begins to give off the dark and musky scent. It is quite strong, lasting about 5-6 hours before fading off but it lingered all day.

It is slightly cheaper than the Chanel one at £64/$87 for the 50ml bottle.

In summary, I really love both perfumes and would recommend either one if you are looking to change up your fragrance for Fall/Winter.  Coco Noir will appeal more to you if you like dark and musky scents but if you are a sweet and floral kind of girl, then Premiere will be right up your street!

Will you be getting either perfume if you haven't already? What other perfumes are you currently loving?

Peace and Love,

Y.
