My Experience at My Extensionz Hair Salon

MyExtensionz is one of Nigeria's leading hair brands and they have been around for a few years, selling hair and lashes in Nigeria and in the US. Naturally, they progressed into a full fledged hair salon which they launched recently and I was lucky to be invited for a pamper session over the weekend.

Review | Kylie Matte Liquid Lipstick in Dolce K

I'm probably one of the last few beauty bloggers to get on the Kylie train (blame Hong Kong) but I'm happy I finally did! The collection has a lot of gorgeous shades but I purchased Dolce K to start and decided to share my thoughts with you guys as I usually do...

Colour: Dolce K is a light nude pink shade with some grey undertones. Looking at it in the tube, I was afraid it will come off ashy on me but I was pleasantly surprised that it worked well with my skin tone. If you are on the lighter side of the spectrum, you can rock it with no trouble but darker shades may need a brown lipliner to tone it down.

Formula: There have been mixed reviews about the formula of Miss Kylie's lipsticks but I think it varies by shade. Dolce K I had no issues with- it applied easily, had great coverage, dried down to a comfortable matte feel on the lips. No issues at all with this one.

Length of Wear: I found that it did not hold up quite as long as some of my other matte lipsticks. It started flaking off after about 4 hours.

Price: At 9k a pop, Kylie Liquid Lipsticks are not cheap. They are actually the most expensive I have ever bought. The liquid lipstick is high quality but I would say that you can get same quality with other brands for cheaper. Dolce K is quite a unique shade though, I'll give them that.

Where to Buy: Check out BeautyRevNG's range of Kylie Cosmetics lip products here.

Have you guys tried any of the Kylie liquid lipsticks? Think they are worth they hype?

Video | 3D Eyebrows That Last Two Weeks!

I'm sure you guys will agree with me when I say the daily eyebrow struggle is REAL! I can confidently attribute my constant tardiness to the quest for nice brows! No jokes...

So imagine my excitement when I heard about 3D Brow sculpting which can give you bomb brows that last two weeks. I was sold before it was even sold to me. Anything that can give me back 10-15 minutes in the mornings is welcome.

I decided to film the process for you guys so you can see exactly how this innovative process works and decide if you want to get them. Brilliant stuff I tell you!

Aftercare/ Maintenance

These 3D Brows last for two weeks but can be even more depending on how you care for them . Firstly, you can't wash your face for 48hours after you get them done to make sure they are dried properly. Gross, I know...but you gotta do what you gotta do! Between my cotton pads and cleanser, I managed to pull through.

After the 48 hours, you can wash your but have to be very careful to wash the brow area very gently. Also, no poking or prodding...just leave them be...like you would pencilled in brows. With proper care, you could probably stretch these to last a month.

Where To Get Them Done

The Beauty Atelier
New Address: 7 Nidi Okunubi Street, Lekki Phase 1
Contact Number: 0809 947 5555
Instagram: @the_beauty_atelier

Cost

N15,000

In amazing news, the lovely people at The Beauty Atelier are giving you guys 10% off all 3D brow treatments once you mention shelovesthefinerthingsYou know I got y'all...we can all have fleeky brows!

You're welcome! :)

Dose of Colors Hidden Treasure Palette...The Best Eyeshadow Palette I Ever Owned....

This Hidden Treasure palette is the BOMB...seriously! I'm not much of an eyeshadow person so I don't have that many palettes but of the few I have and use (all NAKEDs inclusive), this is the best.

I first saw this baby in action on MakeupShayla's Snapchat and I knew I had to get it asap! Only problem is that the Hidden Treasure palette is limited edition so it is probably easier for a cow to pass through the eye of a needle than to track this palette down. .. I was super lucky to snatch up the last one from BeautyRevNG.

Review | Taos Cosmetics Liquid Velvetines

Taos Cosmetics is a Nigerian brand that's been on the scene since 2014 but I think 2016 saw them rebranding and releasing a new range of products including liquid lipsticks, highlighters and a neutral eyeshadow palette.

I am very grateful to have received five of their liquid velvetines shades and I have been trying them over the last two weeks to be able to share my thoughts on the brand with you guys.

Review | Benefit Porefessional Super Matte Rescue Mattifying Gel

This more or less became a travel blog in the last few months thanks to my temporary relocation to Hong Kong. Just in case you missed it, I chronicled my whole journey here. I am still working on summing up my Hong Kong experience though so watch out for that :)

Back to regular programming...I was strolling past the Benefit counter in HK one day and I spotted the Porefessional Super Matte Rescue and stopped to look at it. Think of this product as the new and improved version of the original Professional which I reviewed here.

You see the Porefessional is excellent when it comes to masking pores the size of craters like mine, but it doesn't do much for oil control which is the main characteristic people look for in primers. Well, I think Benefit listened to the feedback of customers and decided to improve on the Porefessional...Enter, Super Matte Rescue....

Unlike the original Porefessional which is a cream, Super Matte rescue is a light weight water-based gel that instantly absorbs excess oil on the skin and helps minimize shine through out the day.  It contains Benefit's signature "diamond powder" which blurs out pores, fine lines and other imperfections....They call it the #NoFilter Filter...

It magically blurs out my pores!!  #NoFilter indeed

The left picture is early in the morning and the right is about 8 hours after...just a little shine

In a nutshell, Super Matte Rescue is the Porefessional with oil absorbing powers. This product has become a staple in my makeup bag because what's not to love about a product that makes you look flawless and controls oil?

I must put a disclaimer out though, I do not necessarily have the oiliest of skins, so this worked perfectly for me. I am not sure how it will hold up on really oily skin. If you know, please share in the comments!

For even more flawless results and staying power, Benefit suggests using the regular Porefessional over Matte rescue before wearing your makeup...Sounds like a lot of product to me but I will try it next time and maybe I will update this post to let you guys know how it worked.

Price and Where to Buy

Porefessional Super Matte Rescue retails for $28, even cheaper than the original Porefessional which is $31. I don't know any beauty retailer that stocks this in Nigeria but once I find one I will update that too!

Have you guys tried Super Matte Rescue or the original Porefessional? Please share your thoughts...

Peace & Love,

Sometimes life comes at you and it comes at you HARD. If you guys follow me on SnapChat (yewandesoba) you will have seen how intense the month of May was for me at work. I was working between 14-16 hour days non stop and even some weekends. Being at the office till midnight was not even a big deal.

At the end of May, I delivered one of the major projects that was tied to my coming for this assignment and I'm grateful to God that it was a huge success. I was given a big regional project to lead of which I had no real prior experience. There was a lot of confusion and self doubt as I made my way along but I never stopped holding on to God and praying that he helps me deliver in excellence. He did just that!

Review | NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation

Sorry I went ghost on you guys...Work has been insane in the last one month, I haven't had any time to focus on much else. Happy to be back and yes HK Diaries will be back this weekend too :)

In this post, I'm sharing my thoughts on the NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation. If you guys have been following, you will know that I've been hunting for a good foundation for a while now with not much luck. See what I thought about Black Up's foundation here.

I bought this NARS foundation in January after tons of recommendations from friends and a lot of bloggers online. I have been using it since then so I've had more than enough time to really take this foundation for several rides.

I'm happy to announce that I have found a bomb foundation in NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation! It has a very liquidy formula which I did not like in the beginning because I'm used to foundations being a little thicker. I went on to realize that this foundation's formula is what makes it so great. It is indeed "Weightless" because it's light and blends very easily into your skin. It does not feel like you have foundation on at all which is awesome!

The amazing thing about this product though is that although it is very light, it is a full coverage foundation. I don't understand the technology that NARS used in creating the All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation but it is perfect. This bad boy covers up blemishes perfectly whilst still looking natural and luminous #SayNoToCakeFace!

The added cherry on top for me with this product is the fact that I was able to get a very close shade match. I have yellow undertones so a lot of foundations come off as orang-ey on me (yuck!). I'm in the shade Macao which is yellow/golden based making it a very close to perfect match for me..Love it!

Now let me tell you what's not so great about  NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation.

Price- It is mad pricey yo! I bought it for 32 pounds in London when the average price for foundations is somewhere between 20 and 22 pounds. In Nigeria, retailers are selling it between N16,000 and N20,000. *clutches pearls* I don't blame them though, FX rates are cruel.

Coverage- The foundation provides excellent coverage but the NARS marketing team exaggerated  when they said all you need is one drop #GirlBye One drop can barely cover half my face...

Length of Wear- Another marketing exaggeration...They say 16 hours, that's not nearly true, at least on me. I have to use my blot powder about 6 hours in when the oil starts to surface. I don't have a problem with that though because I have combination skin. It might be a problem for oily skin  so I would recommend getting a tester and seeing how it holds up before purchasing the full bottle.

Swatches

It covers the beauty spot on the back of my palm perfectly

Not the best lighting but this is what it looks like on me

NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation gets a big fat YES GAWD from me...Love it! This is actually my first purchase from NARS and if this experience is anything to go by I should probably stop by their stands a lot more

Have you guys tried this or any other NARS products? Thoughts?

Peace and Love,

Y.

#HKDiaries Week 10

Birthdayyyy

The highlight of my week 10 was my birthday on April 25th. One of the things I thought about when I first moved here was the fact that I was going to be spending my birthday alone this year. My husband and I are birthday mates so no year goes by without a double celebration of some sort so I was definitely not looking forward to being alone this year. I was wrong! I was not alone! From the start of the day to the end, I was surrounded by amazing people who tried their very best to make me feel special and happy on my birthday and indeed I did.

Work Work Work Work Work Work

This was basically the theme song of this week and will be for the next one month as I work on closing out this project. Tight deadlines, long hours, late nights, early mornings, y'all know the drill. Sometime this week I felt so weak and drained I had to take my laptop and go sit in one of the phone booths. For about 3 hours I was between working and taking several 10 mins power naps. I'm so happy my boss did not run into me having a nap because that would have been proper awkward..LOL...But really I felt like I could not go on, I really needed to shut my eyes for a bit.

Sorry this is late! I won't burden you guys with excuses of why this didn't go up yesterday so I will just apologize :)

After two months in Hong Kong, I have come into a sort of consistent pattern with my lifestyle and realized that the day by day, weekly recap might no longer be suitable for sharing on the blog with you. I do not want my posts to seem repetitive and lose the power to transport you guys along this journey with me. Therefore, I decided to change the format of HK Diaries. I plan to still share weekly but in a different style- I will only be sharing the most important highlights of my week in free flow as opposed to the more restrictive daily recaps. I'm keen to hear what you guys think of this new style, let me know in the comments!

Sunday

It was Easter Sunday and no force on heaven or on earth would have stopped me from going to church to turn up. I was at least thirty minutes late as is my usual fashion in life generally but I made it to the service which was a wonderful celebration of the Resurrection of Christ from the grave. It was perfect- the worship, sermon, play everything..I'm getting to really like the Vine Church but I realized that I kind of miss my home church. I follow Pastor Goodman and Elevation church on twitter so seeing their updates makes me miss them more :)

Makeup Review | Black Up Paris

Before now, I had only ever tried one product from Black Up, The Mattifying Fluid Foundation (review here) and I didn't get on very well with it. Majorly because of a wrong shade match more than anything else. I had planned to try more products from this brand because so many people I know rave about their products. Luck smiled on me though when Black Up sent me a HUGE load of products to review on the blog. Quick shout out to all the companies, big and small for your generosity, it is very much appreciated.

Most of Sunday was spent marinating in my bed after the weekend's shenanigans. I didn't even party that heard but I was blacked out for must of Sunday. Old age?

I barely managed to make it to the supermarket before they closed at 10:30pm so I quickly picked up what I needed for the week. Was still way too tired to do my usual Sunday cooking so I just climbed back straight into bed.

Korean Beauty Review | Introducing Dr Jart

A big part of my experience here in Hong Kong is discovering the hidden gem that is Korean Beauty aka KBeauty. In the last few years, the whole world has clocked that Asians have that ever radiant, ever young game on lock down so KBeauty products have been all the rave from America to the UK. One of the many reasons I took this work assignment, shallow as it may seem was because I could get unlimited access to these gems at pump price.

Over the course of my time here, I will be buying and trying things (because Guinea Pig) and sharing them with you. Today I'm introducing a brand called Dr Jart.

#HKDiaries Week 3

Catch Up: Week 1, Week 2
Sunday

So on my first day around Hong Kong with Cheryl, she mentioned to me that if you come to Hong Kong and never go hiking then you have missed out on seeing more than half of the city. My response to her was "I'll be fine missing out on that half" because navigating hills and mountains is not my idea of fun. However, I received an email last week saying the office had organised a hiking trip and BBQ in celebration of Chinese New Year. They had me at BBQ, so I opted in.

Bright and early on Sunday morning, Emma, her friend who was visiting and I set out for Tai Mei Tuk. This hiking trail along with a lot of the other ones are located outside of Hong Kong Island (north of the New Territories) so it took us nearly two hours to travel out there.

Is Benefit's They're Real Mascara Worth The Hype?

I think Benefit They're Real mascara must have been the most hyped mascara in 2015. Everyone, their mama and their cat was singing high praises about this product claiming no better mascara had ever been made.

Every time I go to London, I go to Boots with the intention of buying it but that 20 pound price tag for a bloody mascara always put me off. I love the finer things but I still try to spend my money with sense.

After putting it off for several occasions, I decided to buy it because my mind wouldn't let me be. Bloggers, does this happen to you to? Like you keep wanting to try a product and until you do, you can't stop thinking about it!

Here's how Benefit describes the mascara "A lengthening mascara that curls, volumizes, lifts, and separates lashes for an "out-of-here" look. "

Here's what I think...

What's Not So Great About It
  • Gimmicky: It did not lengthen curl, volumize, lift or separate my lashes. to any reasonable extent
  • The Formula: It is really thick and gloopy so it makes my lashes clump together- no bueno. It also smudges quite easily aka panda eye
  • Price: For the price, I expected so much more from this mascara but it just did not come through

What's Great About It

  • The Brush: It is big enough to get through your lashes with ease
  • Color: It is a true jet black

Before & After Pictures

In simple words, there's not much to this mascara. I do not understand the hype at all. Maybe I suddenly don't know how to apply mascara well but I would rate Benefit They're Real a 2/5. I thought that wearing this mascara will give me the effect of wearing false lashes but nope, the name is just kind of misleading. Put up against my trusty Maybelline The Falsies mascara which I have used for several years, Benefit They're real does not quite match up. The Falsies retails for less than half the price and performs much better. To be honest if you have non-existent lashes like mine and you want really long lashes, then just wear false lashes. I don't think any mascara can really and truly elongate your lashest. Don't believe the magazine ads.

What do you guys think about Benefit They're Real? Worth the hype?

Peace & Love,

Y.

Guest Post | 5 Valentine's Day Gift Ideas for Men

Because I will probably do a shoddy job of suggesting gift ideas for men this Valentine's, I decided to enlist the help of a male blogger this year. Nosa of EatDrinkLagos is here to help!

*********************************************************************************

Men really don’t get no ratings on Valentine’s Day. The other day on Twitter, some girl was listing Valentine’s Day gift ideas for men and she included “big towel” and “shoe rack”. You might chalk it off as Twitter banter, but there’s a big time hamper vendor that’s selling a clipper and a card for N22,000. In their weekly meeting, Nigerian women decided we are only worth BYC singlet. Add a towel to that, if the relationship is serious.

Well, we deserve more than that. And no, that lingerie you got yourself is not a present for us. Doesn’t work like that ma’am.

COLOGNE

Cologne is always a winner on Valentine’s Day. In fact, cologne is such an easy and safe pick that I’m surprised women don’t opt for this more often. What cologne you get him obviously depends on the man you’re dating. I mean, shoe get size. This is no excuse to be cheap and get him anything just because I said cologne is a good present. Get him something that’s notch above what he normally uses. It’ll make it a lot more special.

Recommendation: My recommendation here would be the Pasha de Cartier perfume

WATCH

Watches are another surefire gift. A little tip here though, don’t waste your money on watches made by companies whose primary business isn’t watchmaking. You wouldn’t buy a purse from Fossil, so don’t buy him a watch from Gucci. Get him a proper timepiece from a proper watchmaker.  On a related note, a buddy of mine got an engagement watch from his wife after he proposed. That should definitely be a thing.

Recommendation: The Apple Watch or a Timex Weekender are great wristwatch choices

GADGET

Men love gadgets like nothing else. Not more than you obviously, but really close. For this list, I’m expanding the definition of “gadgets” to include video games as well. So feel free to pay for his Football Manager so he can stop looking for a torrent like a wretch.

Recommendation: I’ve been really looking at the new Apple TV and the Amazon Echo. Hopefully, madam reads this blog.

JEWELRY

This is a bit of a tricky one because some men absolutely love jewelry while some men detest it. Well, they don’t detest it to the point of not wearing a wedding ring so don’t buy the excuse when your husband gives it.

Recommendation: If you’re getting your man some jewelry, check out Miansai. They make really good stuff and they have this rope anchor bracelet that I’ve been scheming on for the longest.

FANCY ALCOHOL

This one is not for me because I’m known to drink boxed wine, but your man is probably fancier than I am.

Recommendation: You can get him one of the 15-year old barrel aged whiskies like this one from Glenfiddich. It's sure to look great in any home bar.

Shout-Out to Nosa for being such a great sport! He literally got back to me with this post in hours! Sure you guys will find this post useful! :)

About Nosa

Nosa is one half of Eat.Drink.Lagos. He loves Mexican food and brunches with bottomless mimosas. And Guinness. And pasta. He supports whatever team Kevin Durant is on and he wants Louis Van Gaal fired.

Review | MAC Shaft of Gold In Extra Dimension SkinFinish

This Shaft of Gold highlighter is one of the gems of MAC's Magic of the Night 2015 holiday collection. When it comes to highlighters, I'm not very experimental. I have used MAC's Gold Deposit (review here) for years and it does a mighty fine job. When I set my eyes on the holiday collection though, I knew "Oh Darling" and "Shaft of Gold" had to be mine!
