#HKDiaries Week 4

Catch Up: Week 1, Week 2. Week 3

Sunday

I didn't go to Church last Sunday because the I went for that hiking thing with people from work but I made sure I made it this week. I think my jet-lag is finally getting better (somebody shout Hallelujah?) because I slept well and woke up in good time for church.

It really enjoyed the service and like I mentioned in my previous post, it still kind of blows me away when I see Asians praising and worshiping God. Traditionally, Christianity is not their religion but the ones here are really really passionate. I think it's kind of like Muslims that convert to Christianity and become such powerful believers.

As I was leaving church, I was very cautious, ducking behind walls and shi trying to avoid running into Mr Cameroon from Week 2. Just when I thought I had made out the door successfully, guess who creeps up behind me??? I was really confused. There are at least 500 people that attend the 11:30am service, how does this man seem to spot me in the crowd?? He asked what my plans were for the day and I replied very curtly that I was going home. He then proceeded to ask if I wanted to have lunch and before he could even complete his sentence, I said NO and walked away..TF??

From church, I stopped at Fortress, one of the big gadget stores here and I finally bought a new camera! I got the Sony a5000 that I have been eyeing for months. My old camera is really bulky and has already started malfunctioning so the Sony a5000 is a much needed upgrade. Sleek, Stylish and takes great shots!

Later on in the evening I did a little cooking, had dinner and then settled in for bed at around midnight.

Monday

My manager is back from travelling so much of today was spent in meeting with her catching up on work and planning for the time I will be here.

I just realized that Easter holiday is next weekend and I started to feel a little depressed. Spending holiday time away from family sucks but it is what it is I guess. One of my colleagues mentioned that she plans to organize some brunch thing so that made me cheer up a little.:) I hope it's a boozy brunch btw...

Monday evening included me watering my plants while giving Plant Care 101 lessons on Snapchat. If you follow me and you rolled your eyes throughout my ramblings, I understand and forgive you. Call me the crazy plant lady...

Tuesday

Work is getting a bit more intense as I now have full responsibility for a regional project that will be happening in May. Everything is still very confusing at the moment and I felt a little overwhelmed after the meeting with my manager this morning. I left the meeting a tad cranky party because of my confusion and partly because I was hungry. I started this thing called "Intermittent Fasting" this week because the way HK is set up, I will most likely return to Nigeria morbidly obese if I don't take care. Food is in abundance and it is everywhere. You will just be walking down the streets jejely and smells of delicious Chinese food will assault you and spiritually pull you into the restaurant, I'm not joking. Anyway, Intermittent Fasting is basically fasting for an extended period of time and then eating within a specified period.

I'm doing the 16/8 schedule which means that I fast for 16 hours in a day and only eat within an 8 hour period. So I start eating at noon i.e no breakfast and stop eating at 8 pm. It is kind of tough for me to do because breakfast is my absolute fav meal of the day plus it gets me started for the day. But yeah the advocates of Intermittent Fasting say eating breakfast is not that important. It's just an idea that has been sold to us. I don't know how long I can do this but so far, so good, I guess. .

Later in the evening, I went to Zumba and I enjoyed it this time. Now I can say for certain my irritation with loosing my way last week affected how I felt about the class. The instructor is awesome and I torched some serious calories!

Wednesday

I went to Immigration this morning to pick up my Hong Kong ID Card. Can I claim to be Hong Kongese now or nah? Anything is better than that wretched green passport, honestly. The chaos that is going on in Nigeria right now,- no light, no fuel, crazy traffic, etc etc makes me feel better that I'm away when I start to miss home. I also read today that the bloody senate rejected the Gender Equality bill and I was proper miffed. I don't understand why a bill as basic as equal rights for all genders should be such a big deal in 2016. Women are seen as second class citizens in our country and it it looks like that's not changing anytime soon, damn shame if you ask me.

I went back to Food Expressions for lunch because Bibimbap is my new thing but I've decided to only allow myself to have it once a week. It was a great way to break my 16 hour fast because fam, I was starving! I hear IF gets better the longer you do it for, I'm waiting for it to get better.

After work I went to go see a sculptures exhibition of a guy called Lynn Chadwick's work. It was happening in my office complex so I decided to pop by/ The art was really impressive, I mean I'm not the biggest art enthusiast but I do appreciate a great piece when I see it. Here are some of my favorites from the exhibition which seemed to have a bit of an African theme going on with some of the pieces...

Did I also mention that some random guy on the street tried to use Voodoo on me? LOL..Ok, here's what happened. I was walking to the train station after the exhibition when some Indian guy said something to me. On a normal day, I wouldn't care to hear what a random person off the streets said to me and I would just keep walking but on this .occasion I stopped and asked what he had said. He repeated "You have a lucky face". I was curious to know what he meant to I continued talking to him (maybe his jazz had already started working, I don;t know). He goes on to tell me how a lot of good luck is coming my way in 2016, told me some general stuff about my character which was for the most part true. Also mentioned how he can read from me that my body is in Hong Kong but my soul is somewhere else and some other stuff which really had me glued to the ground.

Next thing he wrote some stuff on a piece of paper, cru, bled it up and asked me to hold it in my left hand. Then asked me some questions- What is your favorite flower? How old are you? What are your biggest wishes in life. I answered saying Orchids, 28 & A happy family, money and career growth respectively. He then asked me to open up the piece of paper in my hand and guess what? He had written the SAME answers to my questions before I even opened my mouth. At this point my heart started beating really fast and I started getting scared like ok, who is this man. He told me he is a yogi master all the way from India who is skilled at reading people's minds and their future etc etc. Next thing he told me that if I give him some money, around 1000 HKD, he will be able to tell me more specific things like the name of some person I think is my friend but isn't really, lol. At the mention of money, whatever trance he had ,me in just broke. My Nigerian sense came back sharpply and I quickly told him that I was sorry I had no money to give him and started walking away. He called me back and tried to bargain to which I refused then he asked me to give him the piece of paper on which he had written stuff about me down which I did.

It was a very unsettling experience because it bothered me all night how this man was able to a very large extent, know stuff about me. I actually googled it and found out that so many people have had this same experience particularly in Asia- Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore etc but some people from Australia and even London said it had happened to them and it all started with the Indian guy saying "You have a lucky face"..LOL. Just google that phrase and you will read all the stories. So it is definitely an organised money making initiative, what I'm still unsure of is if these guys actually have "powers" to read minds and see the future or if it's all just trickery. I asked an Indian colleague of mine and he said they really do have powers and spends years training under a master....What do you guys think?

I was just super grateful to God that I broke out of it as early as I did because who knows, I might have been currently emptying my bank account for this yogi master. Baba God constantly coming through for his children, yo!

After I got home, I had to take a work call at 10 pm my time,..Great way to end the day wasn't it?

Thursday

I was seriously craving a good salad for lunch today so I went to try out a salad bar called Just Salad Express in IFC mall. The place is really fancy with an automated ordering system where you could either build your own salad or pick one of the Chef's recommendations. Pretty fancy but unfortunately, the salad wasn't that great! They were miserly with the chicken and other toppings and it was quite expensive.

We had an office birthday party for everyone that had their birthdays in Q1 and it was set up like a proper party with decoration, birthday cakes, drinks, snacks etc. I really love how they take employee welfare quite seriously in the HK office. These little random acts just make the office a much nicer place to work in. Nigeria offices, please take note.

Went for my customary Zumba class in the evening which was fun as per ush...They also have a class on Saturdays that I'm considering going for but that would mean spending 300HKD every week on Zumba...I dunno man...

Oh I also had a conference call at 9pm tonight, I see this becoming a trend :)

Friday

Friday came in all its glory and pleased was I with it. I had plans for the weekend and I could hardly wait for 5pm to back, lol. My boss's boss was in town today so tension was generally a bit high but nothing I couldn't handle as a G, yanah. I had to do a mini presentation to her and I think I kind of nailed it :)

I decided to have a salad for lunch today because I was planning on a big dinner so I decided to get one from Starbucks...BEST! Much better than the one I got from Just Salad and almost half the price. They were so generous with everything in the salad that I did my happy dance whilst eating it. I think Starbucks will be my go to place for salads, who would have thunk it? Also ordered a skinny caramel macchiato with it because that drink is heaven in a cup. If you haven't tried it, what are you waiting for? Except you are in Naija, sorry :) Maybe Cafe Neo has something similar...

After work that evening I went for a Thai cooking class that I signed up for on Meet Up. It was in Lai Chi Kok which is quite some distance from the main city. When I told my colleague I was going there she described it as very "local". I told her that when you describe something as local in Nigeria it means bad but she insisted it wasn't bad just that you wouldn't find any expats hanging around there, lol. Nice red flag...

Anyway I found my way there and yes the area isn't exactly luxurious but I had a lot of fun at the class. When I first got there it was kind of awkward because I think they were shocked to see a black person walking in, every single person in that room was of Asian descent. They also all seems to know each other very well so they were all just gisting in Cantonese while I stood around awkwardly, lol. Once the class started though, it got better. The chef, Kevin was really really look and he made an effort to run the class in both Cantonese and English, lol. He even made sure he translated the jokes for me so I was laughing like 10 seconds after everyone had laughed. :) I managed to get talking with 3 or 4 people in the group though and they were all generally really nice.

With Chef Kevin

The class was fun and we learnt how to make Tom Yum soup, Pad Thai, Green Curry Chicken and Mango Sticky Rice. My husband is in for a major Thai treat when next I see him, yass! After we finished cooking we all ate, drank Sangria and had a good time.

My legs were toast by the time I got home because I was wearing heels and standing from 7:30 to 11:30pm. Wearing heels to a cooking class is not the smartest choice, apparently.

Saturday

I spent Saturday morning making brunch, doing laundry washing my makeup brushes and taking blog pictures with my spanking new camera :))))

Later on at night I went out for a girls' night out in Lan Kwai Fong(LKF), Hong Kong's party district. I went with a lovely girl called Micki, who reached out to me on Instagram probably through the hashtag Hong Kong saying she would love to meet up. She's from Trinidad & Tobago so it was so cool to hang with a melanin sister! She was also meeting with 3 other friends who were also black so it was literally a melanin party! We caused quite the stir running through the streets of LKF, all slaying from head to toe.

LKF is lined with so many clubs and bars all blaring music and people spilling out of the clubs into the streets. Like seriously, there were hundreds of people just chilling and dancing on the streets, it was a sight to behold. It felt like I was in a movie just walking through the streets, def one of the top 10 things I have experienced in my life.

We started off at this Caribbean bar called Rummin' Tings which was so much fun!. The food, the drinks AND THEY PLAYED NIGERIAN MUSIC! Like I squealed in excitement when I heard Tiwa Savage Romantic on the speakers. Micki assured me that I would hear some more Nigerian music as the night went on, oh the joy!

From Rummin' Tings we went to another bar called Orange Peel and had so much fun! It wasn't super packed like it was just us and like 15 other people that night but the DJ was popping off, we didn't stop dancing! He played so many Nigerian songs, I was on top of the world man. If you follow me on SnapChat you probably saw me busting a move to Wizkid's "The Matter"! Way too much fun! Oh the girls were a really great group, we all got along really well and had fun!

We went to yet another club after Orange Peel but only stayed there for like 15 mins before deciding that it was time to call it a night. Hopped into a taxi home, legs toast yet again because heels. We walked around so much and a lot of LKF is hilly ground so it was just pure torture. I think I should just make the decision to put all my heels away while i'm here, not worth it.

I met a Nigerian guy (can you believe that??!!??) who's been in HK for the past 9 months also here on a work assignment and I was so excited, lol. He actually knows a couple of my friends in Lagos which was really funny. The world is really much smaller than we think.  First thing I asked him though is if there was any Nigerian food here to which he answered Yes! Yayyyy!!! I will def check the place out next weekend, stay tuned!

And thus went week 4...

Peace & Love,

Y.

Hong Kong Fun Fact

Hong Kong is the most densely populated city in the world. Seriously, sometimes I get mini panic attacks by the sheer number of people around me especially on the MTR.

  5. Hahaha..if care is not taken you will return morbidly obese.. :) hilarious! ..I recently moved as well..and as the weather warms up I'm just realising the winter damage! Zumba away...I wonder if apps like Pay as you gym work in Hong Kong? Basically you pay a fee for the app and can attend as many gyms/classes that are signed up to the app.....Another way I work around paying is note all the gyms in your neighborhood and most give you a free day pass to "try" the gym out before you decide to join :) boom

  7. About the LuckyFace powers, I tend to think not all such things are trickery. I mean, there have always been different deities and 'forces' and stuff, so there's a chance that these people actually have the ability to see into the future. At least your money is still intact, so hey! WeThankDaLord. lol

Yay Melanin! So cool how you are meeting up and doing stuff. I feel like I might have been moping around for the first few months. haha

Mentally noting all these places. haha. Now I really really want to see the city!

  10. Its good to see that you are actually having a lot of fun and meeting more melanin. When you eventually move back to Lagos you'll be suffering from serious HK withdrawals which i seem to have every week when i read your posts. A visit back to HK is the works sometime this year.
