The highlight of my week 10 was my birthday on April 25th. One of the things I thought about when I first moved here was the fact that I was going to be spending my birthday alone this year. My husband and I are birthday mates so no year goes by without a double celebration of some sort so I was definitely not looking forward to being alone this year. I was wrong! I was not alone! From the start of the day to the end, I was surrounded by amazing people who tried their very best to make me feel special and happy on my birthday and indeed I did.

I woke up the morning of feeling super grateful to God for a new year really really excited. I am such a BIG birthday person, the day means a whole lot to me and I also value other people's birthdays as well. I got into work to find out that my my two office besties John & Monica had planned a birthday lunch for me. We went to a Spanish restaurant called Espuma. I'm a big fan of Spanish food so it was an excellent choice, I loved every single thing we ordered, so fresh and yummy! I have been making a list of all the restaurants my husband and I are going to go to when he comes visiting and Espuma has gone on that list, it was that good.
Shoutout to Emma who indulged me in a one hour birthday photoshoot near the pier. She took so many amazing pictures, best birthday present ever!
I was still reeling from all the excitement of the day when I received a massive package from DHL and I just knew that it had to be from my husband...I mean no one else is checking for me like that..lol. I was so blown when I opened the box and in there sat a pair of beautiful Valentino shoes that I had been eyeing for a while. Look, I was so overwhelmed with joy that I cried. Just the thoughtfulness of him managing to pull of a birthday surprise for me from thousands of miles away had me bawling. God continue to bless that man for me!!!
It felt like surprises would not stop coming when my manager presented me with a birthday cake and then my colleagues ambushed me a cute dessert tray with candles and everything. They sang for me and I had to blow out the candles and everything. I was a very very happy girl the whole day!
In the evening, I went to dinner with a few friends at an Italian restaurant called Pirate. It had come very highly recommended as the best Italian place in Hong Kong but we were all sorely disappointed. The food was passable at best and everyone on the table thought the same thing. It didn't stop us from having an amazing time though. Fun conversation, lots of wine and then my birthday cake came out and everyone sang for me again! I was seriously on top of the world at this point.
I went to bed that night feeling happy, loved, grateful, overwhelmed and did I say HAPPY???
I suffered serious post birthday blues the next day...This was my mood....
I felt instantly better when I got to the Apple store and picked up a birthday present for myself! I bought the Beats Solo2 Wireless Headphones because my big eyes have been on them for sometime. Since I got here, I have been spending a lot of time commuting on public transport and the only way to survive those especially in a densely populated city like HK is to shut out the rest of the world. I had been using regular earphones but man the struggle of messing with tangled wires, i needed an upgrade.
I have been living using these headphones ever since I got them, a worthy investment...
I discovered something amazing this week- Korritos! Basically a Korean version of a mexican burrito but significantly more delicious and healthy! It is vegetables, rice and a protein filling of your choice wrapped in seaweed. I don't know wha it is about these but I had it twice this week and both times were a delightful experience. K-Roll is the name of the restaurant that created this culinary masterpiece called Korritos and I said a prayer for the owners when I first tasted it. You guys should add trying a Korrito to your bucket list, no jokes...
Guys! There is a fully equipped gym in my office and I waited 10 weeks to use it! Shame on me I know but the awkwardness of having colleagues run into you slaving away on a treadmill or catching you fully drenched in sweat leaving the gym was what kept me away for this long. This week though, a lightbulb went off in my head. I work late nights almost every day of the week and most times the office is empty so I'm going to take advantage of those late nights to use the gym!
On that Wednesday I started working out at 9:30pm and I didn't leave till almost 12 midnight. Talk about going hard! There is is just something exhilarating about having the gym all to yourself that I did not want to stop until my I was literally about to collapse. I paid for it by nursing pain in my calves and gluten for the next few days. Here's hoping I can be consistent with the office gym, there is simply no reason not to be!
I went back to the waxing place Strip (from a few weeks ago) and got a Brazilian wax. I expected the worst because the same person has waxed me for the last three years and I was nervous about a new person in my nether regions. This nervousness made me put it off for much longer than normal and the thing with waxing is the longer you wait the worse it gets.
Guess what? This was my fastest, least painful waxing experience ever. I realised that I have just been suffering myself with Aunty ChiChi all these years for nothing. Now Aunty ChiChi is a professional waxer and a sweetheart, the problem is she used soft wax and paper strips which are of the devil. At Strip, they use hardware which sticks only to the hair and not your skin and they pull the wax off on its own, not with a paper strip! The paper strips adds even more pain to an already painful experience so using hard wax was a refreshing experience. I'm not saying it was pleasant or painless but the pain was much more manageable, more like discomfort rather than hell. When she told me she was done, I couldn't believe it.
Ladies, if you are ever getting waxed, please save yourselves the trauma and ask for Hard Wax. Someone on twitter told me that Tirta Ayu Spa in Lekki has hard wax so guess who their newest customer is? I'm sorry Aunty ChiChi, I love you and all but this torturous relationship may have come to an end...
Because you people know that I can't go a week without engaging in some form of social activity or the other #TurnUp. Do you remember Meet Up, the online community for expats that I joined in my first few weeks of being in Hong Kong? Well I decided to bail on them because there was nothing expat-y about the groups in Hong Kong. At the Thai cooking class I attended, I was the only non-chinese person there. Don't get me wrong, I have zero issues with Asians but when I joined Meet Up I was looking to connect with people like me, from another country but working in Hong Kong.
Cue in InterNations, a truly international community of expats in Hong Kong. I signed up to their April social event and from the guest list I saw that over 35 countries were represented! Just the thing I was looking for! I dragged my partner-in-crime out here Jennifer to attend the event with me and we had a blast! At the main event, I got to network with a good number of people who had just moved to Hong Kong like me and great conversation was had. There was an afterparty that followed on another floor of the venue where a new club Secrets was launching. We had so much fun and the DJ was dope! That's so not a common occurrence here that I had to go shake his hand, no jokes.
|We had to wear name tags which I thought I was too cool for so I stuck it on my purse :)|
One thing that amazed me was that there was free-flow champagne for everyone who attended the club launch party that evening. And when I say free flow I mean free flow, they did not stop rolling out the bubbly till we left. I wonder if such a thing can work in Nigeria, the club will probably run into debt on their launch night!
I spent Saturday and Sunday in bed recovering from the madness that was Friday night. I wonder if truly old age is starting to knock on my door because I used to be able to party 3 days in a row non-stop but now one night out and I have been unable to get out of bed!
Peace & Love,
Hong Kong Fun Fact
