10 Things I Will Be Intentional About In My 30s

Peeps,

I finally turned the big 3-0 on Tuesday, April 25th!!! Thank you so much to all the love you guys sent to me across all platforms. The anticipation and excitement towards the day was mad real, I can't even explain it. Instead of  that common fear of getting "old" I am seriously looking forward to coming into my own in my 30s. I feel like I am at the cusp of greatness and I am fully ready for it. #30AndFlourishing

This is the most open and honest I have ever been on this blog and it took me a while to hit publish but here goes nothing. These are the 10 things I plan to be intentional about in this new phase of my life.

  1. Spirituality: Right now, I'm kind of sitting in the middle when it comes to my spirituality- I am not the worst sinner neither am I the most devout Christian. This is a very comfortable position to be in, all I have to do is pray now and again, turn up in church most Sundays and try to be a decent human. I fully realise that for me to get to the next level of greatness, this needs to change. I can no longer be in that comfortable middle, I need to choose a side. I want to seek Jesus earnestly, I want my spiritual life to blossom, I want to be a great representation of God on earth. I attend an amazing church (Elevation) and I plan to fully take advantage of the church and the richness of its resources to help me on this journey.
  2. Fitness: I have been on my fitness hustle for about 7 years now and it has been an on again, off again kind of relationship. I have times when I go HARD in the gym and eat really clean and I have times when I'm like "Mi o le waku" and then the cycle goes round and round. I will not deny myself the food I like because that just leads to binge eating, I will not overdo it in the gym because that just leads to sore muscles and a 2 week recovery period (lol), I plan to committed to my fitness lifestyle in reasonable, more sustainable measures so I don't burn out fast.
  3. Finances: Nobody sabi chop life pass me, hence the name of this blog and I have been like that since I was a child. My mum often quotes a young 10 year old me saying "Money is for spending" when she chastised me about not keeping money in my piggy bank...Sigh! I only started becoming money-smart in the last one year. Before then, money was indeed for spending- I saw no reason why I couldn't fully spend and finish money that was my own on things I liked. Thank God for a conversation I had with an unassuming young man in my office one day, It was my wake up call. This guy told me he saves 70% of his salary every month, sometimes even 100% :o I realised that my mates have been stacking up cash for years, even from when they were students and weren't even earning a salary and here I was, living la vida loca. Now don't get me wrong, I will never be Kunle, who saves most or all of his salary, does not believe in eating out and does a full on SWOT analysis before he spends every single naira he has. No, but I have become wiser, money is now for BOTH spending and saving. I have happened to find a healthy balance where I invest 1/3 of my salary monthly in mutual funds. 1/3 for my expenses and the other third I use for my day to day living which includes treating myself and my loved ones. I know some of you finance ninjas will still say this is not good enough and I could be spending less on myself #IAintSorry :)
  4. Friendship: Over the years, I have had my fair share of " frenemies" who I have had to shed like old skin through very painful processes.  I do not regret going through that though, it is all about evolving and I truly wish them all the best. Right now, anyone I refer to as a close friend is someone that I can very confidently say is in my corner. I love the peace that comes with knowing that your friends are always there for you and will never be caught throwing #Shade. I don't mean light-hearted, banter kind of #Shade ( lol my friends and I go to town on each other whenever we are together), I mean that one that comes from a place of jealousy, spite, anger. In my 30s, I won't be caught hob-nobing with such people. I will stick closer than glue to friends that have my best interest at heart. #NoFrauds (Tell 'em Nicki!).  I in turn will work on being the best friend I can be. I plan to be intentional about checking up on my friends, ensuring they are OK, hanging out with them, going on holiday, celebrating their birthdays, being a listening ear and so much more.
  5. Patience: Those who know me well know that I am not the most patient one in the room. It doesn't take much to get me popping off but I have come to realise- who anger epp? I have become more patient since I got married (LOL) and I will continue to work at being a better person in this regard- more patient, more understanding, giving people the benefit of the doubt, more yielding etc. It will not be easy for a Taurus woman like me but it will be worth it!
  6. Sunscreen: At this stage of a woman's life, her skin is so much more susceptible to sun damage so I am no longer playing games when it comes to sunscreen. I used to be anyhow about it before now, but I have decided I will never leave my house in the daytime without wearing sunscreen on my face. I won't use my hand to aid and abet mother nature's ageing process, no ma'am!
  7. Eye Cream:Another thing I was wishy-washy about, some days I'll wear it,some days I can't be bothered. I intend to be fully bothered about eye cream going forward. The skin underneath the eye is very thin hence one of the fastest areas to start showing signs of ageing.
  8. Spa Days: When I go to the spa, all I ever do there is get waxed and I'm out the door. I never really saw the need to spend money on anything else on the often RIDICULOUSLY priced spa menus. Alas, the time has come where I have seen the need. Nothing ages women faster than stress and we all know how stressful living in Lagos can be. I have committed to one spa day a month where I will get a massage, facial, body scrub, steam bath, all the woks ala BobRisky. When you see people like Aunty Mo Abudu & Aunty Betty Irabor looking like fresh milk at their age, you think it just happened upon them? No sis, these women are taking good care of themselves. My bank account may not be as robust as theirs but I will do what I can within my capacity.
  9. Serum: Caroline Hirons the queen of all things beauty recommends that when you are between the ages of 20-35/40, the most expensive thing in your skincare should be a great serum. I have been using the Radha Beauty Vitamin C Serum and loving it but I want to include another serum in my routine for night time. Recommendations welcome.
  10. Cleansing: We beauty bloggers constantly chirp "don't sleep with your makeup" bla bla bla but are often guilty of the very same sin, at least I am. On numerous occasions, I really can.not.deal and I just want to crawl into bed and sleep. Sometimes, I will be a disgrace and sleep with a full face and at other times, I will muster enough strength to use wipes. News Flash Yewande- You will deal! Even if you get home from a night out and you can barely get out of your clothes, you will wash your face :) Death to wipes! No matter how expensive or what brand they are, they are so bad for your facial skin! If you can wipe your face, you can wash it.
There is so much more I have in my head as concerns my Modus Operandi for 30 and upwards but I'll stop here so that I don't start boring you guys.

Excited for the journey ahead!!!

Peace &  Love,

Y.

  7. Totally concur with everything you've said ...I actually started focusing more on my skin when I clocked 30 .You should try " Clarins multi active day and night cream "

Also to add to your list - The pace at which I do things / make decisions ( Love it ) I always felt like I was rushing somewhere in my 20s .

Water is also crucial - Our skin will thank us

  13. Happy Belated Birthday once again!!! ^_^

I loved reading this post sooo much. I was smiling like "Preaaaaach it"

On this finance matter ehn, it's so hard for me. I am a proper money-is-for-spending babe. The day I found out some people at my job have saved miliionssss from this same salary that I complain cannot buy me enough things, I was gobsmacked. I'm earnestly working on this though. Daddy be a savings scheme.

Eye cream and fullout spa days are things I'm very very on-the-fence about. I mean, i'd use them if they were in my lap but it's not in my monthly budget. Maybe i'll see the light as I grow older.

I am a staunch believer in the sunscreen and makeup cleansing routine though. With easily-burned and acne-prone skin, i can't leave these things to fate. I use the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Serum. It's really decent. Maybe ask the Nail Studio in VI if they do samples.

I love milestone birthdays sooo much. As long as one's life is in a good place, no reason to dread getting older. I feel like I have penned a mini blogpost in your comment section. I apologize.

Have a beautiful year ahead. May the lines continue to fall in pleasant places for you. xx
